Chief Petty Officer Lester Elwood Walden, Sr. US Coast Guard retired, passed away June 28, 2017. He was born in Algiers, LA and raised in Latimer, MS. Lester was a graduate of St. Martin High School and attended Perkinston Jr. College. Enlisting first in the US Naval Reserves in 1954, he joined the USCG in 1956, retiring after 32 years off the Acushnet, Gulfport, MS. Lester was a Master Mason of the Azalea #898 Masonic Lodge in Mobile. He was a member of the Conde Cavaliers for over 40 years, and was a loyal and avid Alabama Fan. ROLL TIDE!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Estanie Barras and Wyatt Walden; and his children, Valerie Ann (Missy) Walden and Lester Elwood Walden, Jr. Survived by his children, Becky Ragusa (Frank), Marrero, LA, Chris Polkey (Lorrie), Mobile, AL, and Dotty Crotwell (Ron), Waggaman, LA. He was a grandfather of six, and a great-grandfather of twelve, as well as a special friend of Pauline McBride and furry friend Tide. Siblings include Bobbie Jean Rodriguez, D'Iberville, MS, Maxine Ramsey (Byron), Latimer, MS, and Beverly Wilder, Moss Point, MS.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. in Bethel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Latimer, MS.
