As part of a continuing effort to learn more of SEBAGO's history, I'm researching the plank owners and publishing what I learn in the Bios and Obits section. Mr. Lipshie was one of the many capable officers and enlisted that detached from SUPCEN Brooklyn with Cdr Evor Kerr for duty aboard SEBAGO. His accomplishments before and after his World War II Coast Guard service are admirable. Prior to his service with the Coast Guard Mr. Lipshie was a mover and shaker in the clothing industry. During the Depression Era he was responsible for opening and operating work shirt and pant manufacturing companies in West Tennessee and Arkansas, providing employment for hundreds. His knowledge of clothing manufacturing process and contacts within the industry were invaluable to the SUPCEN command. When detached to SUPCEN and assigned to SEBAGO it's believed he was trained in SONAR tactics and may have had some input to a project regarding large troopship transport in preparation for the invasion of Japan. After World War II Mr. Lipshie returned to the garment industry, working his way up in the firm of Salant and Salant and eventually becoming its' CEO. Mr. Lipshie married his bride, Mildred Lee, in New York on March 5th, 1942. They remained joined until his death in 1998 at age 86. The following obituary appeared in The Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) - Wednesday, June 3, 1998 - JACKSON - Joseph Lipshie , 86, retired president and CEO of Salant Corp., died of heart failure Monday at West Tennessee Skilled Nursing Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Congregation B'Nai Israel, where he was a member, with burial in the church cemetery. George A. Smith & Son Funeral Home North Chapel has charge. He was a World War II Navy and Coast Guard veteran. Mr. Lipshie , the husband of Mildred Lee Lipshie , also leaves a daughter, Mary Jane Lipshie of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Sam Lipshie of Nashville and Arthur Lipshie of Sanford, Fla., and two grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Congregation B'Nai Israel or the charity of the donor's choice. His widow passed on in 2002 and her obituary was published in The Commercial Appeal, (Memphis, TN) - Friday, March 15, 2002 - JACKSON - Mildred Lee Lipshie , 87, homemaker, died Wednesday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Graveside services will be at noon today at B'nai Israel Cemetery. George A. Smith & Sons Funeral Home North Chapel has charge. Mrs.Lipshie , the widow of Joseph Lipshie , leaves a daughter, Mary J.
